Wall Cabinet Signs

Guide to American Sign Association's Wall Cabinet Signs

Guide to American Sign Association™

Don’t buy your sign from a drawing, a slick website, or photo-shopped pictures when you can actually see and side-by-side compare real signs and designs.

Business Sign Experts

Whatever sign type you’re considering, our team of 11 highly trained Sign Experts is ready to help.

We’ll meet at your office, jobsite, home—wherever is best for you.

You’ll typically receive a firm quotation during our meeting (not a non-binding estimate)—or within one business day.

We can design and build your next sign while maintaining social distancing.

Remote design collaboration

Our Showroom is open and sanitized so you can safely review your options.

Collaborate remotely with our design team or work together in our spacious Projection Room while maintaining distancing.

Are You a “Visual” Person?

It’s hard to picture a sign from words alone. What comes to mind when you hear “triple-layer multi-colored lighting with a textured backplate”?

Our showroom solves that problem. Most people are visual—seeing is believing!

Don’t buy your sign from a drawing, a slick website, or photo-shopped pictures,
when you can actually see and side-by-side compare real signs and designs.

Visit Our Unique Sign Showroom

Are you a visual person? Is seeing believing?

Unique in the sign industry, American Sign Association™ built an 85’ × 50’ (4,000+ sq ft) indoor sign lighting laboratory to test longevity, visibility, and effectiveness. Open to the public—free.

Don’t buy your sign from a drawing, a slick website, or photo-shopped pictures when you can actually see and side-by-side compare real signs and designs.

Thousands of visitors have learned how design, materials, construction, and lighting affect business results.

See many sign types up close and at distance under varied lighting—without worrying about the weather.

Example of push-through lettering

Will sodium vapor or metal halide parking lot lights change your sign’s night colors? How visible is border neon in daylight? Should you choose PinLights™, LetterLites™, SpectraLites™, or Trembler™ signs? Use Brighter Signs™ neon or SolarBrite™ LEDs for channel letters? Fluorescent or HID for your monument? Do Daylight or Cool White fluorescents show colors best? What’s the difference between flex-faced, Lexan™, and acrylic cabinets?

How do shadows affect readability? Should the wall behind the sign be light or dark? Would a different sign type suit your brick wall better? Should you consider a routed face with push-through letters?

Don’t buy your sign from a drawing, a slick website, or photo-shopped pictures when you can actually see and side-by-side compare real signs and designs.

As an additional enticement to visit our showroom—and to smooth our manufacturing flow—we periodically offer limited in-store specials, even unannounced to our team of Sign Experts.

They’re based on opportunities in our production schedule. If we tell our team too soon, they collectively sell too many!

Specials are for a specific type of custom-built sign with lots of available options, but a very limited quantity, first-come-first-served.

Why Buy Factory-Direct from a State-Licensed Company?

Why not buy from a Sign Dealer (Sign Broker / Sign Store / Car Wrap company)?

Illuminated wall cabinet sign

Would you give a car dealer $10,000 and say “buy me the best car” sight-unseen (or from a drawing)? You’d likely get the car that makes the dealer the most money—not the best fit for you.

Dealers often buy from manufacturers to resell, aiming to resemble a drawing while maximizing margin.

You need to know all the details of how your sign will be manufactured and installed. It must meet your needs—not someone else’s profit goals. What are they telling the manufacturer to leave out?

Free estimates Believing “a sign is a sign” gets you a Yugo instead of a Cadillac. Remember the Yugo? They didn’t last long.

Many dealers cannot legally install or service electric signs. Ask to see their license.

Ask the manufacturer for their license as well. Some aren’t licensed for electrical work and must subcontract installation.

Who provides the warranty—the manufacturer, installer, or salesperson? If the sign was installed illegally, will anyone honor the warranty? Were permits actually obtained? Is the sign safe?

As a large UL and ETL listed manufacturer, our name is on every sign. We can’t afford a bad sign—especially with our 5-Year $0 Cost Warranty plus Lifetime Guarantees.

Texas does not allow installation of non-listed electrical signs, and a Texas Sign Contractors License (TSCL) is not evidence of an OSHA-approved electrical sign listing. Additional approvals are required.

Why Are “Listed” Signs Critical to You?

ETL listing mark UL Listed mark

Virtually all cities—and the State of Texas—adopt the National Electrical Code (NEC) as law.

The NEC requires electrical signs to be Listed (tested and labeled with an appropriate Listing Mark) for electrical, structural, and installation safety.

OSHA recognizes which certification bodies can test to the required standards.

UL Certified badge

For you, the Listing Mark is insurance: the sign has been independently tested for safety and proper installation—not just claimed by a seller.

Will your sign be tested and approved for wet (outdoor) locations? Not if it’s not Listed.

If the sign you’re purchasing doesn’t have an ETL or UL Listing Mark label, it is probably not legal to install anywhere in Texas (with a few local ordinance exceptions).

Buy carefully.

Cabinet Signs Construction

Steel and aluminum fabrication For strength, durability, and appearance, our illuminated signs use aluminum (#3003, H14—not “soft” aluminum) skins over a welded structural-steel inner frame.

Large metal areas are reinforced to prevent “oil-canning.”

The inner steel frame is painted before skins are installed—critical to prevent rust stains later.

A Warning About Some Very-Substandard Signs

Some companies use plastic, Dibond, and ACM-type panels for outdoor cabinets. Texas heat is brutal: aluminum composite materials (thin aluminum over a polyethylene core) are especially prone to warping outdoors.

Plastics and metals expand/contract at different rates. In ACM sheets, those dissimilar materials can deform under temperature swings. They aren’t designed for this application—yet some companies still use them.

They shouldn’t.

The Importance of Sign Thickness

Thickness does more than add presence—it affects your graphics.

The minimum cabinet depth depends on internal lighting type plus the type and size of the face.

Lighting and face types will be discussed later. Wall cabinet sign example

The larger the face, the thicker a properly made cabinet must be.

Adequate depth prevents visible “hot spots” or “zebra striping” at night—both make a sign look cheap and reduce readability.

Extruded aluminum frames are limited to shallow depths and lack a structural-steel inner frame, making quality and strength harder to achieve. We do not use extruded cabinets for these reasons.

We calculate what’s required for an impressive, readable sign—and then we build it.

Doing it right can cost more up front, but what’s the value of a “cheap” sign that turns customers away?

Retainer Types

There are two primary retainer styles: 3-D “picture-frame” retainers and flat retainers. The choice can dramatically change your sign’s appearance. See both styles in our Showroom to understand the differences.

The Importance of Retainer Width

Cabinet sign with styled retainer The retainer (the metal border that conceals the face-holding mechanism) plays a big role in perceived quality. Width and color should be part of the overall design—not an afterthought.

This is another reason pre-made extruded frames are undesirable.

Use our Specifications checklist to ensure competitor quotes match the same quality and features.

Please stop by to see these options in our Sign Lighting Laboratory & Display Showroom.

The Safety Feature of a Fixed Bottom Retainer

On many signs, the bottom retainer is simply screwed on. If it loosens and falls off, the plastic face can fall and break. Our bottom retainer is built into the cabinet and can’t be removed without disassembling the entire bottom—much safer.

Soften Your Signage if You Can

Rounded-corner cabinets usually cost more than square-edged signs—but they can boost sales.

When Procter & Gamble removed the round “target” from Tide® packaging in the 1960s, sales dropped. Restoring the circle lifted sales and inspired rounder forms across industries.

Head & Shoulders® testing found users preferred product in rounded containers; the rectangular version even “felt itchy.” Notice the round swirl in their logo.

Rounded, less “sharp” shapes create a more favorable impression. Visit our Showroom to compare square vs. rounded examples before locking in a design that can influence your business success.

NightLit™ Solar-Panel Lighting Option

New product burst Solar panels are ugly and expensive.

So what can you do when it’s cost-prohibitive to run power to a sign location?

American Sign Association™ created an affordable, attractive, unobtrusive answer: a sealed, outdoor wet-location solar panel with a multi-light pack designed specifically for signs. Patent and Listing pending.

NO ELECTRICAL WIRING REQUIRED!

NightLit™ lighting isn’t meant to be as bright as an advertising sign—it provides attractive, adequate illumination for identification, directional, and informational signage.

NightLit solar sign pack Mount with three screws/bolts to virtually any surface. Solar-powered with internal backup rated to last 72 consecutive hours without recharging. Automatic on-at-dusk / off-at-dawn controls.

Great for building identification.

Modern wayfinding relies on addresses and suite/apartment numbers—even while driving.

The International Fire Code (IFC) 505.1 sets requirements for commercial building identification. Many AHJs (Authorities Having Jurisdiction) extend these to require lighted address/unit IDs to aid emergency responders at night.

This also helps package and food delivery (UPS, FedEx, Uber, Lyft, Grubhub, etc.). Apartment and condo managers use lighted building IDs as a leasing amenity for guests/deliveries at night.

NightLit illuminated example Some AHJs require address lighting to remain on during a building power outage—smart, but historically expensive to retrofit due to wiring and backup power. NightLit™ makes compliance far more affordable.

Increased safety and convenience at an affordable cost.

Other uses include:

It’s economical, can be permanently custom-inscribed, custom-painted, UV-protected, vandal-resistant-coated, repairable, and readily available.

There are size and design constraints. Talk with us—since we invented NightLit™, we’ll engineer a solution that works for you.

Initial product spec: 24–36" cabinet length; 15" height or less.

Automatic Electronic Thermal Lighting Controls*

When our founder managed a supermarket, he learned that simply turning signs on during gloomy days lifted sales—if he remembered to turn them on. With tinted glass, it’s often hard to tell if a business is open.

Why do Sunburst™ LED outdoor digital signs boost business so dramatically? Lighted signs draw more attention than unlighted signs—even in daylight.

Lighting control concept We factory-install automatic electronic lighting controls on every lighted sign* and calibrate them to turn on/off exactly when lighting will help you do more business. Over 40+ years we’ve documented daytime, dusk, shadow, and orientation effects to maximize legibility and attention.

Settings vary by orientation (E/W/N/S), lighting type (neon, HID, fluorescent, LED), and cabinet design.

Our controls sense low light and shadowing to maintain readability. Each sign is custom-set.

We do this at no extra charge. As far as we know, no other manufacturer offers this—free or otherwise.

Ask your electrician to add a time clock to disable lighting during hours you’ll never need it (e.g., 2:30–5:30 AM). At all other times, let our controls decide to optimize visibility while conserving energy.

Our SolarBrite™ LED signs use very little energy annually.

Common time clocks (e.g., Intermatic/Tork) aren’t finely adjustable; dawn/dusk shifts >15 minutes per week seasonally. Manual resets and overrides are unreliable—that’s why we include thermal lighting controls.* We do not use photo cells/eyes—neither precise nor reliable.

Anecdotally, this feature alone can pay for many signs every year through increased profits.

See the system live in our Sign Lighting Laboratory and Showroom, along with supporting tests.

*Dependent on size and design. Failure mode is “always on,” so your sign remains attractive; you may use slightly more electricity until service is performed.

What Are Day-Light Designs™?

Day-Light Designs example Knowing our signs will be illuminated in daylight, we design lighting for daytime effectiveness.

We pack backlighting to create a subtle daytime glow—if you light a sign during the day, it should look great.

SolarBrite™ LongLife™ LEDs are substantially brighter than typical LEDs, enabling superior daytime visibility without wasting energy.

“We prosper because of our sign. ASA’s unique use of color and light by day and night keeps us the most visible. No one else could work their magic!” — the 407 club

“Look at that sign, it’s like made out of plastic!” — Jon Taffer, Host of Bar Rescue

“...but look at that sign, it only faces one way! They’re turning their back on 13,000 cars every day!” — Jon Taffer

Signs Are Like Boats

There are $50,000 boats and $400 boats. Both are “boats,” but only one keeps your business afloat. The details matter.

If a company invests in extra value (lighting types/amounts, paints, protective coatings, etc.), they’ll talk about it. Pay attention to what they aren’t telling you.

Our site, literature, and proposals describe what we’re building—and why.

Sinking boat metaphor

No one includes quality features they don’t also describe in their documentation.

Consider how important your sign—the first thing customers see—is to your success.

Buyer Beware! Nothing hurts a business more than bad signage.
