Monument Signs In a Nutshell

Guide to American Sign Association’s Monument Signs

Watch: overview of monument signs on YouTube

Value of American Sign Association™

Are You a “Visual” Person?

It’s hard to picture a sign from words alone. What do you imagine when you hear “triple-layer multi-colored lighting with a textured backplate”?

Our Showroom solves that. Most people are visual — they need to see materials and lighting first-hand to judge value. Seeing is believing!

Don’t buy from a drawing, a slick website, or Photoshopped pictures when you can see and side-by-side compare real signs and designs.

Pole Sign vs. Monument Sign — Do You Have a Choice?

If you have a choice, install a pole sign. You’ll be glad you did.

Visibility and Reach

Pole/Pylon Signs: Tall (often 20–100+ ft), built for long-range visibility over buildings/trees—great along highways and fast roads. Their height and illumination (including LEDs) capture motorists’ attention from afar.

Monument Signs: Shorter (˜5–12 ft), ground-level signs that excel at close-range prestige and wayfinding near entrances; ideal for slower traffic or pedestrian areas.

Value: Choose pole signs for broad market reach; choose monument signs for a premium, localized brand presence.

Branding and Aesthetics

Pole Signs: Prioritize visibility and function; can support large cabinets, digital boards, and multi-tenant listings.

Monument Signs: Complement architecture/landscaping with brick, stone, or stucco; convey permanence and professionalism.

Cost and Maintenance

Pole Signs: Higher structural/installation costs but potent ROI in high-traffic corridors.

Monument Signs: Typically lower initial cost; may need more frequent cleaning/landscape upkeep.

Zoning and Location

Pole Signs: Often height-restricted by ordinance in residential/mixed-use zones; great for highways, large lots, and industrial parks.

Monument Signs: More broadly accepted due to low profile and aesthetics; perfect for entrances/slower traffic areas.

McDonald’s has reported that replacing a monument sign with a pole sign can raise a store’s sales ~15% on average.

Visit Our Unique Sign Showroom and Sign Lighting Laboratory

Are you a “visual” person? Is seeing believing?

Unique in the sign industry, American Sign Association™ built an 85' × 50' (4,000+ sq ft) indoor Sign Lighting Laboratory to test longevity, visibility, and effectiveness of the lighted signs we manufacture. Open to the public, free of charge.

Don’t buy from a drawing, slick site, or Photoshopped images—come see and compare real signs side-by-side.

Thousands of visitors have learned how design, materials, construction, and lighting impact business outcomes.

Explore many sign types up close and at distance, under varying light—without worrying about weather:

Inside the sign showroom Will parking-lot lighting affect your sign colors at night? How visible is border neon by day? Fluorescent or HID for your monument? Should you consider PinLights™, LetterLites™, SpectraLites™, or Trembler™? Daylight vs. Cool White fluorescents? Flex-face vs. Lexan® vs. acrylic? How do shadows affect daytime readability, and should your wall contrast? Would routed faces with push-through letters look better on brick? We’ll walk through all of it with you.

Don’t buy from drawings or Photoshopped pics—see and compare the real thing side-by-side.

With our interactive transforming storefront, the Showroom features $750,000+ in business sign ideas — plus solutions for churches and schools!

Better Sign Products

No one else can offer you this unique opportunity—be sure to take advantage.

Your business will be better because you do. If you don’t visit, it could cost you thousands in sales every year. Can you afford not to?

I almost made a huge mistake by not listening to you and visiting your showroom prior to buying my sign. I thought I knew what I wanted, after listening to so many salespeople… boy, was I wrong. My vision of the sign did not jibe with what it would really turn out to be, even after viewing so many drawings. It was obvious the moment I entered the showroom. If I had stuck to my guns my sign would have been a disaster. I would have wasted a lot of money.”
Cecil Drake, Drake Communications

Showroom Specials

Sale tag — showroom specials

Sometimes it really pays to shop.

As an additional enticement to visit our showroom—and to smooth our manufacturing flow—we periodically offer limited, in-store-only specials (often unannounced to our Sign Experts).

These are tied to openings in production scheduling; if we announce them too early, they sell out too quickly!

Specials apply to specific custom-built sign types with many options, but limited quantities. First-come, first-served.

Lawrence Badger, M.D.

Why Buy Factory-Direct from a State-Licensed Company?

Why not buy from a sign dealer (a “sign broker” or “sign store”)?

Masonry, unlighted monument sign

Would you hand a car dealer $10,000 and ask them to buy the “best car” sight-unseen from a drawing? You’d likely get the car that makes them the most.

Sign dealers resell signs made by others—usually to resemble a drawing—optimizing their margin, not your outcome.

You need to know how your sign will be built and installed. It must meet your needs, not a seller’s profit goals. What are they telling the manufacturer you don’t need?

Thinking “a sign is a sign” gets you a Yugo, not a Cadillac. Also, most sign dealers, wrap shops, and sign stores cannot legally install or service electric signs. Ask to see their license.

Ask manufacturers for their electrical license, too—some outsource installs. Then ask: who actually warranties the sign? If it was installed illegally, will anyone honor that warranty?

We are a large, UL and ETL listed manufacturer—our name is on the sign. With our 5-Year $0 Cost Warranty plus Lifetime Guarantees, we have to care.

Texas does not allow installation of non-Listed electrical signs. A Texas Sign Contractor License (TSCL) alone is not proof of an OSHA-approved electrical listing; additional approvals are required.

Why Are “Listed” Signs Critical to You?

ETL listing mark UL Listed mark

Virtually all cities—and the State of Texas—adopt the National Electrical Code (NEC) as law.

The NEC requires electrical signs to be Listed (tested and labeled with an appropriate listing mark) for electrical, structural, and installation safety. OSHA recognizes the U.S. labs authorized to test against the many applicable standards.

UL certification badge

For you, the listing mark is insurance. It proves the sign has been tested for structural and electrical safety and will be installed properly—per independent labs and U.S. regulations, not just our say-so.

Will your sign be tested and approved for wet (outdoor) locations? Not if it isn’t Listed.

If the sign you’re purchasing does not have an ETL or UL listing mark label, it is likely illegal to install anywhere in Texas. There are a few local ordinance exceptions.

Buy carefully.

Certified Welding

We employ certified welders—horizontal, vertical, and overhead.

We are among the very few sign companies in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex employing certified welders.

Automatic Electronic Thermal Lighting Controls*

Our founder learned early—managing a grocery store—that turning signs on during cloudy/rainy days measurably lifted sales. With tinted glass common in the South, it can be hard to tell if a business is open. Modern LED illumination makes standing out inexpensive.

Why do Sunburst™ LED digital signs lift sales so dramatically? Lighted signs draw more attention than unlit signs—even in daytime.

Lighting control concept illustration

We install automatic electronic lighting controls on every lighted sign we manufacture*—factory-calibrated to switch on exactly when lighting boosts visibility (dark/rainy conditions, shadows) and at the right moment at dusk. Settings vary by orientation (E/W/N/S), lighting type (neon, HID, fluorescent, LED), and construction.

Our controls sense low light and shadows, then engage illumination to maximize legibility. Each sign is custom-tuned.

Another way we help your sign perform. To our knowledge, no other sign manufacturer includes this—free or otherwise.

For best efficiency, have your electrician add a time clock to keep the sign off when it should never be lit (e.g., 2:30–5:30 AM). All other times, let our automatic controls decide.

Note that common time clocks (Intermatic/Tork) aren’t finely adjustable; dawn/dusk shifts quickly seasonally. Relying on time clocks alone means constant manual tweaking—another reason we include precision automatic controls.* We do not use crude photo-cells.

Anecdotally, profits from this feature alone often exceed the cost of most signs every year.

See the system operating—and our supporting tests—in our Sign Lighting Laboratory and Showroom, then decide for yourself.

*Dependent on size and design. Failure mode is “always on,” so your sign remains visible until service is completed.

You Need an Experienced Sign Company

“Look at that sign, it’s like made out of plastic!” — Jon Taffer, Host of Bar Rescue

“If they put that little effort into their sign, I’d hate to see what they put in their food.” — Nick Liberato, Chef/Owner, Calidelphia Catering

“…but look at that sign, it only faces one way! They’re turning their back on 13,000 cars every day!” — Jon Taffer, Bar Rescue

Signs Are Like Boats

Sinking boat — metaphor for poor-quality signage

There are $50,000 boats and $400 boats. Both float—at first. Don’t expect the $400 boat to keep your business afloat. The devil is in the details.

If a company pays for premium features (lighting, paints, protective coatings), they’ll talk about it. Pay attention to what they aren’t telling you.

Our sites, literature, and proposals detail exactly what we’re quoting—and why.

Nobody includes quality and features in their product that aren’t described in their literature and quotations.

Consider how important your sign—the first thing customers see—is to your success. Buyer beware: nothing hurts a business more than bad signage.
